AREA RUGS

Area rugs can pull a furniture grouping together, add a splash of colour, and even make an unattractive carpet less noticeable. Knowing how to choose a rug size however, is as important as choosing a style.

Here are some helpful hints:
Room Size: A border of flooring should show around the rug. Measure your room, then subtract three to four feet from the length and width to get an idea of the size you would need.

Dining Room: Choose a rug that is at least four feet longer and wider than the dining room table to ensure that the rug extends beyond the chairs when they are pulled out.

Hallway Runner: In general the runner should be four to six inches narrower and twelve to eighteen inches shorter than the hallway.

Stair Runner: You should leave an even distance on each side (between the spindle and the wall, or between the walls). Usually three to six inches depending on the width of the stair treads.
